Sergiev Posad is a perfect day trip from Moscow, and you’ll be spending most of your time at the incredible monastery, Trinity Lavra of St. Sergius.

Dating back to the 14th-century, it is a major tourist and pilgrimage site.  It is also a UNESCO World Heritage Site.  The monastery was founded by one of Russia’s most important saints, Sergius of Radonezh.  Some of his relics are inside along with those of other important historical actors.

Sergius’ 1355 charter for the monastery’s construction served as a model for his disciples who founded over 400 monasteries throughout Russia.

As the Russian Orthodox Church’s spiritual centre, Trinity Lavra of St. Sergius is actually the most important monastery in Russia.  Over 300 monks currently live there, so you’ll see a few within the crowds.

Trinity Lavra of St. Sergius is nothing like any other monastery I’ve seen.  I love how it is a mini city surrounded by military walls for protection.  Have you seen any a monastery like this before? ↓

I wonder how the top looks at night.

Notice the cross fountain.

I love how the cross is a fountain. I’ve never seen that before.

I love the cross on the left. The line was that long the whole time I was there.

What comes to mind when you think of a monastery?
